Pordenone 1888-Milan 1975. A doctor by profession, he joined the Italian Social Democratic Party. Arrested by the Fascists in ’31 for helping Filippo Turati escape to France. Interned in Bolzano in 1943. In 1946 he entered municipal council in Milan, and was elected mayor in 1951, taking over from the socialist Antonio Greppi. His administration worked on reconstructing and bringing back to life the city with important infrastructure, such as the Metro system and the Forlanini airport.
