Victor De Sabata
Trieste 1892-Santa Margherita Ligure 1967. A graduate from the academy of music in Milan, in 1917 he conducted his work Il macigno at La Scala. After Monte Carlo and the United States he returned to La Scala in ’29 and stayed until 1957 as the conductor and artistic director. Conducted an immense number of works. Viewed by critics as a rival to Toscanini. He conducted in the great international theatres, with a preference for Wagnerian opera. Romantically linked to the actress Valentina Cortese.
