Tommaso Grossi

Bellano (Como) 1790-Milan 1853. Writer and poet, a friend of Manzoni. Graduated in Jurisprudence in Pavia. Took to writing and in Milan in 1816, he published Prineide, a satirical poem in Milanese. His friendship with Carlo Porta was of great importance for his choice of dialect and satire. The national historic poem I lombardi della prima crociata (1826) was the literary work with the greatest circulation in its day. His subsequent historical novel Marco Visconti was translated into French, English, German and Spanish. After he married he abandoned literature for the profession of notary.
