Nicola Romeo

Sant’Antimo (Naples) 1876-Magreglio 1938. An engineer and entrepreneur, he graduated in Naples, studied electronic engineering in Germany and France, refused the post of stationmaster in Tivoli, found a job as a promoter in Italy of electric trams made by Robert Blackwell, an English company. Manager of the Italian branch, but in 1906 he set up Nicola Romeo & C. achieving success in rolling stock and machinery. In 1915 owner of ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) in Portello, converting it to war production and turning it into Alfa Romeo. Launched the Torpedo which won the first ten Targa Florio races. The company also produced locomotives in Saronno and aeroplanes in Pomigliano d’Arco. He left the company in 1928. Senator of the Kingdom from 1929.
