Lodovico Melzi d’Eril
Milan 1820-Milan 1996. Inherited the title and possessions of the Melzi family. An entrepreneur, he (and the Rothschild Bank) privatised the Lombardo Veneto railway company in 1856. Constructed the building in the Cavalchina district in Milan (now Via Manin) and started major marsh drainage work in Polesine. After the Unification of Italy he promoted the urban development of the Umberto district in Milan “for the urgent need for housing and for the decorum and benefit of our Milan”.
