Ildefonso Schuster

Rome 1880-Venegono Inferiore 1954. Benedictine priest, graduated in Philosophy from the Pontifical College of Sant’Anselmo, cardinal and archbishop of Milan appointed by Pope Pius XI from 1919 to 1954, beatified in 1985 by Pope John Paul II (after his tomb was reopened and his body was found to be intact). He worked on a project to “Christianise Fascism” but abandoned it after the racial laws (condemned as “neo-pagan ideology”) came into force. He attempted to intercede on behalf of Mussolini proposing that he be handed over to the Allies under his responsibility.
