Giuseppe Missori

Moscow 1829-Milan 1911. A patriot and soldier, fought in many battles for the Unification of Italy. A committed Republican, in 1860 he joined the Expedition of the Thousand. With Garibaldi at the Battle of Aspromonte against the Bersaglieri, and again with Garibaldi at the Bazzecca in 1866 and at Monterotondo and Mentana in 1867. Saved Garibaldi’s life at Milazzo. A Garibaldian general, and a municipal councillor in Milan after Unification. The city named a square behind the Duomo after him (the statue on horseback is by Riccardo Ripamonti). Died in Milan run over by a tram.
